Republican Gathering 2 - By Trisha Mann

On the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of April I had the privilege to represent the NT Republican Movement at the RG2 which was held at ANU, Canberra.  The gathering had been previously held in Canberra in August 2005.  This was the first time the NT Republican Movement had been invited to the gathering.

RG2 was hosted by ARM ATU Branch and was organised by a committee made up of different Republican groups.  It was decided at the end of the weekend the RG3 will be held in October, 2006 in Brisbane and hosted by The Real Republic Group, led by Clem Jones and David Muir.

The weekend was a fantastic opportunity for networking with other organisations and swapping ideas and opinions on becoming a republic.

Discussions and sessions where held on Introduction of groups, The history of the Republican Movement, Republic and Reconciled movements, National Identity, Results from a Survey and models where presented.

The NT Republican Movement had the opportunity several times on the weekend to give presentations about the work we were carrying out in the NT.  We shared on such themes as the bill of rights, constitutional reform, Reconciled Republic and Indigenous Australians and about the Eureka Memorial Day.

It is good to see that on the main issues we seem to be all on the same bus and I welcome the opportunity to attend the RG3.  Personally I must say it was refreshing to see that the representatives for the organisations and individuals at the gathering had such a broad range of people from all walks of life.
